Keanu Reeves has been a movie star for decades, from Speed to The Matrix to John Wick. Away from the action scenes, he has also built a reputation for generosity that his fans and co-workers often talk about. Some of his kind acts were thank-you gifts to the stunt teams who worked beside him. Others were small moments with strangers, stranded travelers, and young fans. Several helped raise money for children's cancer programs and mental health services. Here are ten documented moments when Reeves went out of his way for other people.
1. Keanu Reeves gave his Matrix stunt crew new Harley-Davidson motorcycles
Making the Matrix sequels meant long, demanding days of fight training and filming with a team of stunt performers. Keanu Reeves found a personal way to thank them. Wikipedia reports that as a wrap gift for The Matrix Reloaded stunt team, he bought Harley-Davidson motorcycles for each member. Hello! magazine, reporting in June 2003, said each of the film's 12 stuntmen received a bike worth about £7,000. The gift matched one of Reeves' own lifelong passions. He is a well-known motorcycle enthusiast, and in 2011 he co-founded ARCH Motorcycle Company, which builds custom bikes. For the people who had taken hits alongside him on set, it was a thank-you they could ride home.
2. Keanu Reeves revealed he quietly runs a private cancer foundation
Cancer is a personal cause for Keanu Reeves. His younger sister, Kim, was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991, and he has been described as a devoted source of support during her long illness. In a 2009 interview with Ladies' Home Journal, Reeves said he had a private foundation that had been running for five or six years, supporting children's hospitals and cancer research. He also said he did not like to attach his name to it and preferred to let the foundation do its work. Wikipedia's biography of Reeves notes the same foundation and his wish to keep his name out of it. It is one of the few times he has publicly spoken about giving that he otherwise keeps out of the spotlight.
3. Keanu Reeves helped stranded passengers get home after a diverted flight
In March 2019, Keanu Reeves was on a United Express flight from San Francisco to the Los Angeles area, operated by SkyWest, when it was diverted to Bakersfield, California. SkyWest said the plane landed safely after a mechanical indication. Instead of waiting it out on his own, Reeves stayed with his fellow passengers. In a video from the airport, he explained that the luggage would take hours to arrive but a van could reach them much sooner. He then rode the roughly 100 miles south with the group, reading out facts about Bakersfield and playing local music on his phone. Passenger Brian Rea, an illustrator, documented the trip on Instagram, and travelers posted photos they took with the actor.
4. Keanu Reeves stopped to sign a welcome sign in a Louisiana yard
In July 2019, Keanu Reeves was filming Bill & Ted Face the Music in Slidell, Louisiana. Stacey Hunt's family lived nearby, and at her teenage son's suggestion they put up a poster to welcome him to the neighborhood. It read "You're breathtaking," a nod to a line from Reeves' appearance at the E3 gaming convention a month earlier that fans loved. When Reeves passed by and saw it, he stopped, signed it "Stacey, you're breathtaking," and posed for a photo with Hunt and her two sons. Bill & Ted screenwriter Ed Solomon took the pictures. Hunt shared the moment online, and the story was picked up by news outlets across the country.
5. Keanu Reeves invited a Make-A-Wish fan to his movie set
In 2019, Make-A-Wish New Jersey helped a young fan named Emily with a wish to meet her favorite actor, Keanu Reeves. According to Screen Rant, which reported the story in August 2019 based on the organization's own Facebook post, Reeves personally invited her to the set of Bill & Ted Face the Music. He also picked out the scene she would get to watch being filmed. Emily's mother said Bill & Ted was one of her daughter's favorite movies and that she was hooked the first time she saw it. Make-A-Wish New Jersey later listed the story among its news highlights, calling the visit a dream come true for the young fan.
6. Keanu Reeves surprised graduates at a virtual high school ceremony
Spring 2020 brought online graduations for many students across the country. At San Dimas High School in California, the town where Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is set, the class of 2020 got a surprise. Keanu Reeves and his Bill & Ted co-star Alex Winter appeared in the school's virtual graduation ceremony, introducing themselves as the band Wyld Stallyns. Reeves wore a T-shirt reading "Be excellent to each other" and congratulated the graduating class. Winter encouraged the students to be kind to one another, and the two signed off in the cheerful spirit of the movies. The Independent reported the appearance in June 2020, just weeks before the release of Bill & Ted Face the Music.
7. Keanu Reeves offered a Zoom call to raise money for kids with cancer
In June 2020, Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho nonprofit serving children with cancer and their families, held an online charity auction. One of the items up for bid was a 15-minute private Zoom call with Keanu Reeves. Idaho station KBOI reported that bidding opened at $3,000 and climbed quickly. Other outlets reported bids above $18,000 before the auction closed on June 22. The proceeds went to the camp's programs, which offer free emotional support experiences to more than 400 Idaho family members and are run with help from over 300 volunteers. The camp's executive director called the outpouring of support a game changer for the organization.
8. Keanu Reeves gave his John Wick stunt team engraved Rolex watches
When filming on John Wick: Chapter 4 wrapped in 2021, Keanu Reeves thanked his core stunt team at a dinner in Paris. Euronews reported that he gave them Rolex Submariner watches, and named stunt performers Bruce Concepcion, Jeremy Marinas, Dave Camarillo and Li Qiang. Each watch was engraved with "The John Wick Five," the performer's name, and a thank-you from Reeves marked JW4 2021. Marinas shared the gift on his Instagram Stories and called it the best wrap gift ever. Later reports said Reeves also had personalized T-shirts made for stunt performers, each showing how many times the character they doubled had died on screen.
9. Keanu Reeves played catch with a young fan outside his concert
On September 25, 2023, Keanu Reeves was in Houston to play a concert with his band, Dogstar. A 9-year-old boy named Elijah was waiting outside the venue with his brother and grandmother. After getting an autograph, Elijah asked Reeves if he had time to play catch. Reeves agreed, and the two tossed a football back and forth for about 30 seconds while someone filmed. The video spread widely online the next day. Elijah told the Deseret News that he was really nervous about playing catch with a famous star, and that he planned to keep the football. It was a small moment, but one the boy clearly won't forget.
10. Keanu Reeves signed a hockey contract to help mental health
Keanu Reeves grew up in Toronto playing hockey as a goalie, and as a teenager he tried out for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. NHL.com reported that he never played for the team because of an injury. On August 22, 2024, the Spitfires finally added him to their roster with a one-day contract. Reeves signed the paperwork and posed in a team jersey. The club then auctioned the items he signed, with proceeds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association of Windsor-Essex. His history with the sport goes back to his early career: his first movie role was as a hockey goalie in the 1986 film Youngblood.
