Nene Royal had the ending planned. The 16-year-old from Phuket, Thailand, had thought about the moment so often that she had rehearsed exactly how she would stand when it came. “I actually practiced the pose,” she later told Entertainment Weekly. Then Terry Crews said her name at the America’s Got Talent Season 21 finale, and every bit of that plan left her at once.
A Cranberries Cover That the Whole Internet Found
Long before the gold confetti, Royal was a teenager with a guitar she first picked up at seven years old. Her Round 2 audition was a punk-rock cover of The Cranberries’ “Zombie” — loud, fearless and nothing like what the room seemed to expect. It travelled fast. Hundreds of millions of views piled up across YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, making it the most-viewed audition of the season.
Howie Mandel wanted more. He asked to see her again at Judges’ Callbacks, where she delivered Muse’s “Hysteria” and earned her place in the Live Quarterfinals. By then the story had stopped being about a viral clip and started being about a competitor.
The Golden Buzzer That Made It Real
In the Quarterfinals she reached for Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” and the room stood up for her. Then Mel B did something that changed the shape of her season entirely: she hit the season’s Live Golden Buzzer, sending Royal straight to the Final and letting her skip the Semifinal altogether.
Royal has since named that her favorite moment of the whole run, aside from the win itself. “That was the moment where I thought, ‘Wow, this is actually happening,’” she said.
It is worth sitting with that for a second. A kid from Phuket who learned guitar at seven, standing on an American stage while a judge told her, in front of everyone, that she had already done enough.
Seven Nation Army, and the Pose She Never Used
The Live Finale performance show aired Tuesday, September 22, and Royal chose The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” The official AGT video of the performance calls it “a fierce, powerhouse rendition,” and viewers agreed — it has pulled in roughly 12 million views in four days. The night after America’s Vote, she performed “The Emptiness Machine” with Linkin Park, sharing the stage with Emily Armstrong.
Then came Wednesday, September 23, and the results. Aerialist Veronika Goroshkova finished fifth. Royal Lasers took fourth. Hundred Fingers came third. Magician Geno Ploeger was the runner-up. And the $1 million grand prize went to Nene Royal.
The practiced pose never happened. “I said to myself, like, ‘Whatever happens, it’s okay. I’m very proud of myself.’ … But then, when Terry Crews said my name, I fell down,” she told Entertainment Weekly. She sank to the stage and rolled around with her head in her hands, crying while gold confetti came down around her. When she finally found words for Crews, they were simple ones: “I’m very happy and emotional right now. I just want to say thank you, and I love you guys for supporting me!”
The Kindness Scattered Through the Night
Finales are built on eliminations, but this one kept finding soft landings. Howie Mandel told Hundred Fingers, who had just placed third, that he would personally produce and pay for a Vegas show for them. Sofía Vergara consoled Goroshkova with a line worth keeping: “the world is about to change for you, even if you didn’t win.” And Terry Crews, who had given Royal Lasers his own Golden Buzzer earlier in the season, looked plainly bummed to be the one announcing their fourth-place finish.
Howie Mandel, Mel B and Sofía Vergara judged this season on NBC, with Crews hosting. Acts eliminated before the Top 5 included Come Here, Olivia Befus, Lai Noelle, Unitree and the Acro Canine Crew.
Royal has been clear about what she wants next. “My biggest dream is I really want to be superstar on tour,” she has said — a sentence that sounds less like a wish now and more like a schedule. She is 16, she has a million dollars, and she has a season’s worth of people who watched her go from a viral “Zombie” cover to the last name called on the biggest night of the year.
And somewhere in Phuket there is still a victory pose waiting to be used. Given the tour she is planning, she will almost certainly get another shot at it.
