They Branded Me Rogue-Touched—Then I Woke Before My Own Death

Delia’s face did something I had never seen in my first life. It slipped.

At the Stone, Delia played her last card.

The whole pack came.

“Clean the pack first,” Delia said. “The kennel girl entered the Trials. Her entry is her life — that’s the law. She’s rogue-touched. Execute the sentence, and the Stone can bless us.”

“I’ll swear once more,” I said. “If she swears with me.”

“Gladly,” Delia said.

We put our hands on the Stone, side by side.

“I never took the tribute silver,” I said.

The Stone stayed cool.

“Say it, Delia. Say you never touched it.”

“I never touched the—”

The Stone flared.

Delia screamed and ripped her hand back. Her palm was blistered black in a perfect circle.

“Lies,” Bram whispered, staring at the ledger. “Before the Trials. Corban Reeve, the loft, two hundred marks. It’s all written.”

Corban broke. He fell to his knees and told all of it — the loft, the granary, the plan to sell the nameless quarter down the rogue road to pay the collector and split the rest.

“The brand price,” Aldric said. “The law returns it to the hand that lied.”

Delia held up her palm. The blister was silvering over, hardening into the rogue mark while she watched. The brand she had made for me, printed on her own skin.

“No,” she whispered. “Ryland. Tell them.”

Ryland looked at the frost on his own wrist. “I’m done lying,” he said.

They sent her down the rogue road before dawn, and nobody watched her go. At first light the collector counted his marks out of Delia’s loft and left without a word.

Somewhere in that week, my first life went quiet. Every change had burned a piece of it. Fine. I wasn’t going back.

Then the testing came. The keeper touches the Stone, and it answers storm-born blood or stays dark.

Aldric put his palm down. The Stone stayed gray. He closed his eyes like a man setting down a weight.

“Seven years more, then,” he said, and stepped back.

I didn’t move. My wolf was awake, and I could feel the Stone the way I feel rain coming.

“Wren,” Bram said. “It isn’t yours to touch.”

“It is. Watch.”

I put my branded palm on the gray rock.

The Stone went white. Light ran up my arm into the mark, and the brand lifted off my skin, silver and whole, and broke into a thousand pieces that landed on every nameless forehead like snow.

Bram read from the book, his voice cracking. “The storm-born has come. The seat is hers.”

The pack dropped to their knees. Aldric knelt last. “I kept it warm, girl,” he said. “It was never mine.”

Nessa stood in the front row, both hands over her mouth. The kennel kids stood where they’d never been allowed.

“Any wolf may enter and claim rank,” I said. “Even the nameless.” I let it sit. “About time somebody proved it.”

Ryland came to me after, in the dark past the pens, holding his wrist out.

“Say the truth on the Stone,” I said. “That’s the only way it thaws.”

“I know.” He looked at me. “I’m not here for the frost. I’m here for you.”

“Say it anyway.”

So he did, his hand on the Stone. He said he lied about the bond, and chose his father’s chair over me, and would spend the rest of his life taking back the night I walked out of the square alone.

The frost melted slow, like the last of winter.

“I know what I said,” he said. “I’m not asking you to forget it.”

“Good. I’m not going to.” I took his hand anyway. Not because he was an heir — I was the seat now. Because he stood when it cost him something. That’s the only thing I ever wanted from anyone.

They call me Alpha now. The pack calls the kennels the front gate, because that’s where I come from.

Nessa sleeps in the big house and complains about the stairs. The nameless have names in the book. The hounds follow me like a shadow.

And the brand? The Stone took it off my palm, but a thin white circle stayed. It itches when the wind changes.

I’ve decided to keep it. It’s the only thing my first life gave me.

That, and the seven days.
