In May 1986, Top Gun hit theaters and became the highest-grossing film of the year. It also gave America a soundtrack it still hums, including the Oscar-winning song "Take My Breath Away." Behind the aviator sunglasses was a cast full of young actors who went on to win Oscars, lead hit TV dramas and direct their own movies. Some of them returned to the story decades later in Top Gun: Maverick. Here is where the pilots, instructors and loved ones of Top Gun went after they left the Navy's elite flight school.
Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise played Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and the role helped make him one of the biggest stars in the world. Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, he had already broken out in Risky Business. He went on to earn Oscar nominations for acting in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. He played Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible films from 1996 to 2025. In 2022 he returned to the cockpit in Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed more than $1 billion and became the biggest hit of his career. On November 16, 2025, the Academy gave Cruise an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards. It was his first Oscar statuette.
Meg Ryan

Meg Ryan played Carole Bradshaw, Goose's warm and lively wife, in one of her early film roles. Born on November 19, 1961, in Fairfield, Connecticut, she had played Betsy Stewart on the soap opera As the World Turns from 1982 to 1984. Three years after Top Gun, she landed her first leading role in When Harry Met Sally…, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She received further nominations for Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, and those films made her a favorite of the romantic comedy. Ryan made her directing debut with Ithaca in 2015. In 2023 she directed and starred in the romantic comedy What Happens Later. In 2024 the Sarajevo Film Festival gave her its honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award.
Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards played Lt. (jg) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, Maverick's loyal radar intercept officer and best friend. The role brought him his first wide recognition. Edwards was born on July 19, 1962, in Santa Barbara, California, and had already appeared in Revenge of the Nerds. From 1994 to 2002 he played Dr. Mark Greene on NBC's ER, his best-known role. For that part he won a Golden Globe in 1998, won six Screen Actors Guild Awards and received four Primetime Emmy nominations. He also made his directing debut on the series. His later work includes Zodiac, Designated Survivor and Netflix's Inventing Anna. He made his Broadway debut in Children of a Lesser God in 2018. Top Gun: Maverick reused his flashback scenes as Goose.
Michael Ironside

Michael Ironside played Lt. Cmdr. Rick "Jester" Heatherly, a sharp-eyed Top Gun instructor. He was born Frederick Reginald Ironside on February 12, 1950, in Toronto. His career took off with his role as Darryl Revok in David Cronenberg's Scanners, and he played Ham Tyler on the TV series V. After Top Gun he became one of the screen's best-known tough guys, playing Richter in Total Recall and Rasczak in Starship Troopers. He also built a long voice career. He voiced Darkseid in DC's animated universe and Sam Fisher in the Splinter Cell video games. Ironside has won four Gemini Awards, Canada's television honors, and he has lived in Los Angeles County since 1982.
