Fast Times at Ridgemont High cast: then and now

Universal Pictures released "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" on August 13, 1982. It was Amy Heckerling's first feature as a director. Cameron Crowe wrote the screenplay from his 1981 book about a year spent among California high school students. The film's young cast included several actors who went on to win Oscars, lead hit TV shows and direct. In 2005 the movie was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry. Here is a look at where some of its familiar faces went next.

Nicolas Cage made his film debut in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982). He had a small part as an unnamed co-worker of Brad Hamilton at All-American Burger, and the credits list him as Nicolas Coppola. He was born Nicolas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California, and is a nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola. Wikipedia reports that cast members kept quoting his uncle's films during the shoot, and that this led him to change his name to avoid the appearance of nepotism. As Nicolas Cage, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995). His recent films include "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" (2022), "Dream Scenario" (2023) and the horror film "Longlegs" (2024).

He later won the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" (2006). Since 2019 he has starred as Bumpy Johnson in the crime drama series "Godfather of Harlem." He also played Saw Gerrera in the "Star Wars" series "Andor" (2022–2025). Away from the screen, he became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 2011 and was later named Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation. He leads the nonprofit Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative.

In "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982), Sean Penn played surfer Jeff Spicoli, a character credited with helping to popularize the word "dude." He went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor twice, for "Mystic River" (2003) and "Milk" (2008). At the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, he won Best Supporting Actor for playing Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in "One Battle After Another." That made him a three-time acting Oscar winner. He did not attend the ceremony, and presenter Kieran Culkin accepted the award for him. His other recent films include "Licorice Pizza" (2021) and "Daddio" (2023).

Eric Stoltz played one of Jeff Spicoli's stoner friends in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982). Three years later he starred as Rocky Dennis in "Mask" (1985), a role that brought him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He kept acting in film and television for years and later became a busy television director. Wikipedia credits him with 12 episodes of "Glee" between 2010 and 2014. He also became a producing director on the CBS drama "Madam Secretary" in 2014 and directed more than 10 of its episodes during its 2014–2019 run.
