On this day #1

On this day in 1992, the Toronto Blue Jays became the first Major League Baseball team based outside the United States to win the World Series. For a game we always called America's pastime, that was a big moment, and a friendly one. Fans on both sides of the border grew up on the same sounds: the crack of a bat, a vendor calling out peanuts, a radio crackling on a back porch on a cool autumn night. That win reminded everyone that baseball belongs to whoever loves it. The photo here isn't from that night. It's from a much older World Series at the Polo Grounds in 1921, all hats and overcoats, and you can almost smell the cigar smoke and the fresh-cut grass. October baseball has always meant hot coffee in a paper cup and a little chill in your fingers. With Halloween a week off, the porch pumpkins are already out watching the last games of the season. Who taught you to love the game?
