On November 6, 1956, Great Britain announced a ceasefire in the Suez crisis after pressure from US president Dwight D. Eisenhower. It came just one day after British and French paratroopers had landed at key locations. The photo here is not from that week. It is an earlier picture of Eisenhower, taken on June 5, 1944, in the days of D-Day, when he and the British were fighting on the same side. Twelve years later, the same allies disagreed, and the matter was settled by pressure and an announcement rather than by more fighting. It is a plain reminder that old friends can disagree and still find a way to stop. With Veterans Day five days away, it is also a good time to remember everyone who served in those years.

On this day #2

On this day in 1869, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Rutgers College beat Princeton University, then known as the College of New Jersey, 6–4 in the first official intercollegiate American football game. Think about every fall Saturday you've spent in the bleachers, on the couch, or half-listening from the kitchen while someone else hollered at the TV. It all goes back to that game, played by two schools in a New Jersey college town. The picture here isn't from the game. It's a page from a local New Brunswick newspaper in 1937, showing the city's mayors. To me it's a nice reminder that the place where college football started was also an ordinary hometown with its own people and its own story. Veterans Day is coming up later this week too, so here's a warm thought for the veterans in your life. What's a football game you still remember, big or small, and who were you with?
