Candy Cane Hot Cocoa Gift Jars

Clear glass jar layered with white sugar, cocoa, crushed candy cane, chocolate chips and mini marshmallows, tied with red gingham ribbon and a kraft tag

Layer sugar, cocoa, crushed candy canes, chocolate chips and mini marshmallows into five 12-ounce jars and you end up with gifts that look like they came from a fancy kitchen shop, for about the price of a tin of cocoa. The whole thing is about 35 minutes of hands-on work, and the trick is in the stripes: fill slowly, level each layer, and the jar does the rest. A free printable supply list and step sheet is included below.

At a Glance

  • Difficulty: Easy. No cooking and no special equipment, just steady hands, a funnel and a spoon.
  • Hands-on time: About 35 minutes to fill and finish all five jars.
  • Drying time: None for the mix, but wash the jars and let them air-dry a full day ahead.
  • Cost: About $25-30 for five jars if you buy every jar, ingredient, ribbon and tag new, or about $12-15 if you already have jars, ribbon and tags, because one tin of cocoa and one bag of sugar cover the whole batch.

What You’ll Need

Everything here comes from a normal supermarket plus a craft shop for the tags and ribbon. The quantities below make five 12-ounce jars, and the printable at the top of this post has the same list as a tick-box checklist.

  • 5 clean 12-ounce glass jars with lids
  • 1 8-ounce tin unsweetened cocoa powder (2 cups)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 10 mini candy canes (about 3/4 cup crushed)
  • 5 kraft paper gift tags
  • 2 1/2 yards of 3/8-inch ribbon or twine
  • A wide-mouth funnel
  • Dry measuring cups and spoons
  • A sealed zip bag and a rolling pin
  • Scissors and a fine-tip marker

Step-by-Step Instructions

Set everything out on a sheet of parchment first. The layers go in from the bottom up in the order below, and each one gets levelled before the next goes on.

  1. Wash and dry the jars a day ahead. Wash five 12-ounce jars and their lids in warm soapy water, rinse well and stand them upside down on a clean towel to air-dry overnight. Any trapped moisture makes the cocoa set into hard clumps, so let them dry completely rather than wiping them out. Check each rim for chips before you fill it.
  2. Crush the candy canes. Unwrap 10 mini candy canes, drop them into a sealed zip bag and roll a rolling pin over them on the counter until you have about 3/4 cup of pieces, roughly the size of lentils. Keep the bag sealed while you roll so sharp shards stay put, and don’t crush them to dust, because the red-and-white flecks are what make the layers look good.
  3. Start with the sugar. Fit the wide-mouth funnel into the first jar and spoon in 1/3 cup granulated sugar. Lift the funnel out, then level the sugar with the back of a spoon so the top is flat, and repeat with the remaining four jars. A flat first layer keeps every stripe above it straight.

  1. Add the cocoa and candy cane. Spoon 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder into each jar, level it gently, then add 2 tablespoons of the crushed candy cane and level again. Tap the jar once on the counter, rather than shaking it, to settle the powder. Work over the sink or a sheet of parchment, because cocoa dust finds its way onto everything.
  2. Finish with chocolate chips and marshmallows. Add 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips to each jar, then fill the top with mini marshmallows, stopping 1/2 inch below the rim. Wipe the rim with a dry paper towel and screw the lid on tight. That headspace leaves the marshmallows room and lets the lid seal properly.
  3. Tie the bows and write the tags. Cut the ribbon into five 18-inch lengths, tie a bow around each jar neck, and write on a kraft tag: “Empty jar into 3 cups milk; warm and whisk, do not boil. Best within 2 months.” Add any allergens from your labels, punch a hole and tie the tag on.

Make It Your Own

Mexican cocoa. Swap half the sugar for brown sugar and stir 1 teaspoon cinnamon plus a pinch of cayenne into the cocoa before layering. The tag suggests adding a cinnamon stick, and the warmth of the spice reads beautifully against the sweet marshmallows.

Salted caramel. Use caramel or butterscotch chips instead of chocolate chips and finish with 1 teaspoon flaky salt. Keep the candy cane layer for colour, since the red stripes still look festive above the gold chips.

Gift idea. Tuck a jar into a cream mug with a candy cane stirrer, or use 8-ounce jars for party favours, halving the layers, and add a second smaller tag with a name. Either way the jar stays the star of the parcel.

Beginner Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)

  • Damp jars make the cocoa set into hard clumps. Wash and air-dry the jars a full day ahead, not minutes before.
  • Shaking the jar to settle the layers blurs the stripes. Tap it gently on the counter and level each layer with the back of a spoon.
  • Filling to the very rim crushes the marshmallows and stops the lid sealing. Leave 1/2 inch of headspace and wipe the rim before closing.

Questions You Might Have

How long does a hot cocoa jar keep?

About 2 months in a cool, dry cupboard. After that the marshmallows may clump and soften, but the mix is still safe to drink.

How much milk does one jar make?

Three mugs. Empty the jar into a saucepan with 3 cups milk, warm over medium heat and whisk until the chips melt. Do not let it boil.

Can I make it dairy-free or vegan?

Yes. Choose dairy-free cocoa, vegan chocolate chips and gelatin-free marshmallows, and check every label before you layer.
