On this day #1

On this day #1

On this day in 2016, the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series and end the longest championship drought in Major League Baseball, 108 years.

For generations of Chicago families, waiting was part of being a Cubs fan. Grandparents passed the hope down to their children, and those children passed it down to theirs. Every spring started with the same quiet thought that maybe this would be the year.

This photo doesn't show that night. It's from 1930, from the Cubs' first home game of the season in Chicago, against St. Louis. The crowd in it was part of that long wait too. Many of those fans hoped all their lives to see a championship and never did.

That's why the win meant so much to so many people. It wasn't only about one team or one season. It was a promise kept to everyone who had kept showing up, year after year, with their hopes still high.
