Guess the year #1

These clues all come from the same year in American life. Can you place it?
News broke that a metal satellite about the size of a beach ball was circling the whole earth, and folks went out in the yard to look up.
A sweet new family show called Leave It to Beaver had its very first broadcast on CBS, and we kids were glued to the set.
Ford rolled out a brand-new car called the Edsel with a big launch day, and the whole street wanted a look at that grille.
Mailing a letter to Grandma took a three-cent stamp, licked by hand and pressed on the corner of the envelope.
The pumpkins were already on the porches back then too, same as this week. What year do you think it was?

Answer: 1957. That fall Sputnik went into orbit, Leave It to Beaver had its first broadcast on CBS, and Ford launched the Edsel with its big "E-Day." A first-class stamp still cost three cents, as it had since 1932, until the rate rose the next summer.
